Men: Prioritize your health to prevent health issues

by Wellness Champion, Concordia Plans

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up … – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

June is Men’s Health Month – and it’s a FAMILY issue! Guys, your health impacts your wife, children, parents, siblings – everyone you care about and who cares about you. So, it’s vitally important to recognize and prevent men’s health problems.

Did you know …

  • 13.8% of men 18 and older are in fair or poor health.
  • Only 28.3% of men 18 and older meet the federal physical guidelines for physical activity that includes aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity.
  • 41.6% of men 20 and older are considered obese.
  • 50.5% of men 18 or older have high blood pressure.
  • The leading cause of death for men is heart disease.

Taking time out for your health may be tough, but it’s worth it in the long run.

Here are a few tips to help get you started making your health a priority:

  1. Check in on your diet. Try tracking what you eat for a week to understand opportunities to incorporate more nutritious foods. Consider cutting back on alcohol or sweets, adding healthy alternatives.
  2. Up the activity. Take stock of how much physical activity you get. Do you want to lose weight? Get stronger? Set small achievable goals to make it a reality.
    • Vitality is a fabulous tool to keep activity fun and rewarding. You can set goals and earn points weekly! Check out PowerofVitality.com to get started!
    • Wondr may also be a valuable resource if you’re wanting to lose weight and/or establish valuable healthy practices. Sign up.
  3. Reduce your risk. Schedule an annual check-up and ask your doctor about recommended cancer screenings while you’re there. In-network preventive care is 100% covered!
    • Be sure to ask about screenings specific to your health as a man, such as for prostate and testicular cancer.
    • There’s Vitality points available for completing your Annual Physical as well!
