Understanding Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, and certain younger people with disabilities. When eligible retired members and dependents of deceased members reach age 65, Medicare becomes the primary payer, and the benefits available under the CHP take on a supplemental role. Members can enroll at a local Social Security office two to three months prior to turning 65. Non-enrolled members are still considered Medicare members by Concordia Plan Services.

The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:
  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) - Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some health care.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) - Covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) - Adds prescription drug coverage to original Medicare. Plans are offered by insurance companies and private companies approved by Medicare.

CHP Supplemental Coverage

Concordia Plan Services is pleased to provide post-65 retiree health coverage to supplement Medicare. This coverage is available to members who are enrolled in Medicare Parts A (Hospital) and B (Medical). Program enhancements for 2016 provide our Medicare members with new CHP Group Plan options and access to Individual Medicare plans (if desired). Additionally, the program is being supported by a Retiree Customer Care Center staffed by AmWINS Group Benefits (AmWINS). While AmWINS will handle the day-to-day administration, the CHP will continue to sponsor the group plan options. This partnership is designed to provide you with a choice of plan options and an experienced team of retiree benefit experts to support you.
